Float
Float is the second book in the Nandria series, set in the spring of 1940 in rural Southwest Missouri.
News that Winston Churchill is becoming Prime Minister and the Nazi invasions in Belgium, Denmark, and Norway irritate the farming community of Boonetown. They want nothing to do with another European war.
Army Captain Will Minnick is slowly recovering from shrapnel wounds he got during his time in the war. He spends his days helping his father farm their land. Nandria groans as she learns of the devastation to her native continent, and she fears the day when Will will be ordered back into the war.
However, they rejoice in learning that Nandria is newly pregnant, although their firstborn Rose is less than a year old. Is there a way Will can take his growing family to be with him?
Or will Nandria remain behind to help her ailing mother-in-law despite the community's divided attitudes toward her living in Boonetown?
Within the community, a nurse’s daughter, Ronda, tests both her mother’s beliefs and her own by asking for help with her summer school math from a woman of color. Yet what she learns from Nandria is far beyond mathematics.
When Ronda goes missing, the neighbor youth working on the farm is the first to volunteer. And Ronda’s mother, defying women’s roles, asks Nandria to go with her to join the men risking their own lives as they search for Ronda.
“I read it in three sittings and was reluctant to put it down when something needed attending. You brought a whole community to life…I especially loved that you portrayed women’s strength–emotional strength, physical strength, the strength of determination, perseverance, and social wisdom…I can feel that as a writer, you were immersed in the world of your characters and the time.”
